When you’re upgrading a semiconductor fab, the instinct is usually to just crank up the wattage. But here’s the thing: getting heat onto a wafer isn’t about how much power you throw at it. It’s about where that power actually goes. Standard quartz lamps are kind of messy. They radiate energy in every single direction. That means half your expensive power is just heating up the machine housing instead of the substrate. It’s a total waste. That’s where the gold coating comes in.
The Magic of the Bounce
Gold is incredible at reflecting infrared light. By putting a thin, precise layer of gold on the reflector or the housing, we stop the energy from being absorbed by the machine and force it to bounce back. More photons hit the wafer. Period. Because the energy is so focused, you don’t have to push your lamps as hard to hit your target temperatures. Your electrical grid will thank you for the lower load.
Managing the Heat
We spend a lot of time looking at how materials emit heat. Since gold reflects most of the IR spectrum, you can squeeze a ton of heat into a very narrow band. Instead of swapping in a high-wattage lamp that might fry your existing wiring, we just make the reflection better. You get more heat on the wafer using the exact same amount of current. Just one tip: keep those gold surfaces spotless. A little bit of dust or oxidation might not look like much, but it’ll kill your reflectance and mess up your thermal profile.
