
Why we try to break our bathroom heaters (so you don’t have to)
Putting an infrared lamp in a bathroom is a bit like throwing a piece of electronics into a sauna. You’ve got steam everywhere, water splashing around, and the temperature jumping from freezing to boiling in minutes. We don’t just “hope” the lamps will survive that. We actually spend a lot of time trying to force them to fail in our lab.
That “IP44” thing
You’ll see “IP44” on the box. To most people, it’s just a random code. To us, it’s the line between a cozy morning and a short circuit. The real enemy here is condensation. Steam is sneaky. It finds tiny gaps, seeps through seals, and hits that hot quartz glass. That sudden temperature shock can be brutal. If the seal gives way for even a second, moisture hits the electrical parts. And we all know what happens when water meets electricity. Not good.
The “Sweat Box” test
To make sure this doesn’t happen, we put every batch through something we call damp-heat aging. Basically, we lock the lamps in a chamber that’s incredibly humid and hot for days on end. It’s like a pressure cooker for hardware. This mimics years of bathroom use in a fraction of the time. We’re looking for the cracks. Do the gaskets shrink? Does the housing warp? If a lamp looks perfect on day one but starts to oxidize on day thirty because moisture wicked into the wiring, it’s a fail. We toss it.
The “Breathing” problem
Here’s the tricky part: high-wattage lamps get incredibly hot. That heat makes the materials expand. Then, when you flip the switch off, everything cools down and shrinks. It’s almost like the lamp is “breathing.” Every time it breathes in, it risks pulling moist air inside the unit. To stop that, we use specific silicone seals. They stay stretchy and tight, no matter how hot or cold it gets. It’s a solid setup, but a quick tip: make sure your bathroom has decent ventilation. We build these things to take a beating, but if you’re living in a permanent cloud of steam, even the toughest casing will feel the stress after a few years.
