
Stop Your Outdoor Heaters From Shorting Out
When people talk about waterproofing an outdoor heater, they usually just look at the outer shell. But that’s not where the real trouble starts. The actual danger zone is that tiny spot where the wires plug into the heating element. In those IP65-rated infrared units, you’ve got a freezing cold wire meeting a scorching hot quartz tube. That’s where the cheap heaters always give up.
Why wires actually fail
Outdoor heaters live a brutal life. One minute they’re pumping out intense heat, and the next, they’re sitting in damp, freezing air. Most companies use basic potting compounds to seal things up. The problem? Those materials shrink and crack when the temperature swings. Once you get a tiny crack, moisture sneaks in. It eats away at the insulation, creates a carbon buildup, and—pop—you’ve got a dead short. We do things differently. We ditched the basic silicone for high-temperature fluoropolymer seals and precision-crimped terminals. It’s a bit more work, but it means the seal stays airtight even when the tube is glowing red hot.
The “White Label” Trap
A lot of the heaters you find online use a generic “dip-sealing” process. It looks great when it leaves the factory, but it can’t handle a real winter. Those seals degrade fast, letting humidity soak right into the electrical contacts. Once that insulation burns out, the whole thing is toast. We focus on the mechanical bond between the wire jacket and the seal. No air gaps. Period. If you see a gap in that sealing bead, you’re looking at a heater that’ll probably fail before the first season is over.
The balancing act of IP65
Here’s the tricky part: if you seal everything too tightly to keep water out, you trap the heat inside. You have to account for thermal expansion. We leave a little bit of slack in the wiring. It seems small, but it prevents the leads from being yanked out of the seal as the metal expands and contracts. If you go with a system where the wiring is pulled tight, you’re just stressing the seal until it breaks. And once that happens, your IP65 rating doesn’t mean a thing.
