
Why Your Bathroom Heater Actually Dies (And How to Fix It)
Here is a little secret about bathroom infrared heaters: it’s rarely the heating element that gives up the ghost. Usually, the element is just fine. The real culprit? The lead-wire insulation. Think about it. You’ve got wiring sitting just a few millimeters away from a quartz tube that gets screaming hot. If the sealing isn’t spot on, that insulation starts to shrink, crack, and eventually shorts out. Then you’re left with a cold bathroom and a dead unit. The heat just eats cheap plastic. Most budget heaters use standard PVC or some low-grade silicone. Those materials can’t handle the constant battering of a high-heat zone. Over time, the heat pulls the plasticizers right out of the insulation. The wire becomes brittle—almost like a dry twig. Once a tiny crack forms, the steam and moisture from your shower seep right in. That’s when you get an arc flash or a total failure. To stop this, we do things a bit differently. We use OEM-grade sealing—a mix of high-temp fluoropolymers and specialized epoxy potting. It creates a tight, airtight seal where the wire meets the housing. This stops “wicking,” which is basically when heat and moisture sneak their way up the wire core. Stop using “band-aids” A lot of generic brands just throw some heat-shrink tubing on the wire and call it a day. But that isn’t a seal. It’s a bandage. Real industrial sealing is all about the fit. The lead wire and the insulator have to fit together perfectly. If there’s even a tiny gap, heat piles up at the joint. We make sure the sealant and the housing expand and contract at the same rate. If they don’t, the seal just pops open after a few uses. One small catch There is a trade-off here. Because our sealing is so heavy-duty, the lead wires are stiffer. You can’t just bend them aggressively or yank them around during installation like you could with those cheap, floppy PVC wires. If you kink a high-temp sealed lead, you might crack the potting compound. Just take your time with the wiring. Be gentle with the bends. It takes an extra minute, but it’s the reason your heater actually lasts.
