You know those old-school heat lamps in bathrooms? The ones that feel like they’re barely trying? We’re seeing a big move away from those toward IPX4-rated infrared heaters, especially in nicer homes. It’s not just about looking modern. It’s about the fact that bathrooms are basically steam rooms, and electricity and water are a terrible mix.
Let’s talk about that “IPX4” thing
In plain English, IPX4 means the unit is built to handle splashes from any direction. Think about your morning routine. Steam everywhere. Maybe a stray spray of water. Standard heaters often let that moisture sneak into the wiring or the housing. That’s how you end up with a burnt-out filament or, worse, a tripped breaker right when you’re stepping out of a hot shower. We build our units to seal off those critical electrical spots. It just works. No surprises.
The magic of Infrared
Most old heaters try to warm up the air. That takes forever. Infrared is different. It sends out shortwave radiation that hits your skin and the floor directly. You don’t have to wait for the whole room to heat up to actually feel warm. We use quartz tubes to make that heat really concentrated. But here’s the catch: this stuff hits hard and fast. If you mount these too low or forget the shielding, you can actually overheat your ceiling materials. You’ve got to get the mounting height just right.
Getting it installed
Usually, you can just swap these into your existing fixture. The real secret is the seal between the chassis and the ceiling. If your contractor leaves gaps, that IPX4 rating doesn’t mean a thing. It’s only as good as the install. One more tip: put it on its own dedicated circuit. These things pack a punch, and you don’t want your lights flickering every time the heater kicks in.
