
A Better Way to Dry Wood Without the Chemicals
Most wood shops still rely on those massive convection ovens. You know the ones—they just blast hot air everywhere. The problem is that this often traps solvents and pushes VOCs right into the air you’re breathing. We do things differently with infrared (IR) curing. Instead of heating up the air around the wood, IR lamps send energy straight into the coating and the wood fibers. It’s a direct hit. Why this actually matters When you use IR, the heat hits the surface instantly. This kicks the curing process into high gear, meaning the finish hardens much faster. Since the solvents evaporate and set quickly, there’s less time for chemicals to leak out into your shop. The result? A cleaner workspace and a much smaller carbon footprint. It just feels better to work in a shop that doesn’t smell like a chemical plant. Getting the hardware right If you’re looking to swap out your dryer tubes, you’re probably looking at quartz-halogen tech. We build these to pack a lot of power into a small space. The quartz lets the shortwave radiation through without wasting energy. But here’s the thing: you’ve got to be careful with your power. Check your voltage and wattage against your existing wiring. If you just toss in a high-density tube without checking the rails, you’re likely to blow a fuse or melt your housing. Also, keep an eye on your reflectors. If they get oxidized or dirty, they stop bouncing the heat where it needs to go. That wastes electricity and slows down your entire line. Keep them polished. The honest truth about IR IR is fast. Seriously fast. But it has one quirk: it needs a clear line of sight. If your pieces have deep grooves or weird, complex shapes, the IR waves can’t reach the hidden spots. You’ll end up with “cold spots” where the finish stays tacky to the touch. When that happens, don’t sweat it. We usually suggest a hybrid setup. Use IR for the initial flash-off to get the bulk of the work done, then run it through a small convection zone for a final soak. It’s the best of both worlds—you stay compliant with environmental laws and your finish comes out perfect every time.
