
Why We Use Gold-Coated Reflectors for Wood Drying
When you’re drying industrial wood, the last thing you want is to pay for electricity that just heats up your oven walls. That’s a waste of money. You want that heat sinking deep into the wood fibers. That’s where gold-coated reflectors come in. Most shops use aluminum or polished steel. They’re fine, but they soak up a lot of the infrared energy. Gold is different. It doesn’t just “reflect” heat—it basically pushes it back.
Getting the heat where it belongs
Here is the thing: gold has a reflectivity level for infrared radiation that puts almost everything else to shame. Instead of the heat scattering all over the place, the gold coating bounces those waves straight back onto the timber. It creates this concentrated zone of heat. You end up getting way more punch out of every single kilowatt-hour. It’s just more efficient.
A word of caution on the heat
Now, there is a catch. Because we’re focusing all that energy so tightly on the wood, the lamp tubes themselves get a lot hotter. You can’t just swap these into an old system and call it a day. You’ve got to check your cooling. If your ventilation isn’t up to the task, you’re going to burn through your lamps way faster than you should. It’s a trade-off, but one that’s easy to handle if you plan for it.
Making it work on the floor
Wiring these up is the easy part. The real headache? Alignment. A gold reflector is only useful if the focal point is hitting the wood exactly. If your lamp is off by even a few millimeters, the magic disappears. Worse, you’ll get hot spots that can actually scorch your lumber. I always suggest using a rigid mounting bracket. Keep that lamp centered. When you get it right, every watt you pay for is actually doing the work. Your cycle times drop, and your power bill per board foot looks a lot healthier.
